I was recently given a copy of Inspirations in Design for the Creative Quilter by Katie Pasquini Masopust.  This book has 10 exercises in creating an art quilt.  Here are my attempts at exercise #1. 101 Patchwork projects and quilts - I made the 2 vases - this one on the cover and a patchwork one inside the book. A trip to Wal-Mart I was able to buy the perfect height vase for the piece at $2!  Being a Virginia Tech fan, I had to start out with a orange and maroon vase. Another thing I learned in Houston while watching a demonstration is that hospital laundry bags are water soluable!   And so much cheaper than buying water soluable stabilizer at Joann's!  I bought 25 huge bags from a medical supply company, split them when a friend.  The bags measure about 24" x 36". On Saturday, I had a full day class with Pam Holland - "Quilting with Character and Charisma".   She was just delightful!   Pam was full of character and charisma!  And her quilts were fantastic.   She had a pile with her in the fornt of the room.  One was as beautiful as the next.  In the morning we traced onto fabric and colored in with Fabrico pens.  Pam showing the class

We could hardly sleep Wednesday night after getting a peek at the showroom floor Wednesday night.  We both had full day classes on Thursday....my first class was with Jamie Fingal and Leslie Tucker Jenison - Musical Chairs.  We painted two blank primed canvases, trading places as the music stopped and started.  When it was all dry, it was cut up and shared.  These were my two pieces.

My sister and I were fortunate enough to fly down to Houston last Wednesday, November 3rd.  Although our plane was a tad late and Super Shuttle was a little delayed, we finally made it to Embassy Suites.  Dropped our bags and walked to the convention center.  Preview opened at 5pm. It was the first visit for both of us and we were amazed at the size of both the exhibit area and the vendor area.

My sister introduced me to Cindy Walter this summer.  I recently took out a copy of Cindy's book Cindy Walter's Snippet Sensations Christmas Celebration from the library.  I was inspired to  create these Christmas cards.  After creating a couple of traditional green Christmas trees I experimented with different colors...orange & yellow, purple & pink, shades of purple, multi-colored.

House number 4 came the old fashion way - an actual hold in your hand photograph (remember those kind?)   I scanned it and used Photoshop to enlarge the picture. Started with oranges and spread out to yellows and reds.  Unfortunately, looking back, I wish I had made the orange area larger.  It kind of gets overpowered by the reds.  Not really sure where it will go from here.  When time permits, I hope to make similar pieces experimenting with color...we'll see where I end up. Last winter,I tried this reverse quilting technique after reading an article by Beryl Taylor in Quilting Arts Magazine.  I thought I would give it another try with just greens, purples and blacks.  I don't think it has quite the feel of my first one - lessons learned.   More color = more beauty. I started making these monochrome blocks at least a year ago.  Whenever I didn't have a specific project in mind, I would sew together these  6 1/2 inch blocks.   When I finally had 49 blocks made - 7 of each color, I added a black border to each square.   When I laid them on the floor for my husband, his first comment was "You need to add two more rows." ... ...especially if you can use the foil from the chocolate in your quilting.  These flower centers were made from  Ferrero Rocher chocolate foils.   Each foil square is fused with two sided interfacing onto a square of fabric.  I used the dark chocolate foil from the center of these flowers.  After I made my "sunflowers", I added this blue fabric - I haven't quite decided how to finish it off

Last week I was surfing through my Dashboard and came across a site that had 1/2 price fabric at the Quilt Shop...I was like a kid in a candy store.  I'll take that, and that, and ooh, that!   Then this package arrived with fabric better than I expected: An inspiring bunch of fabrics...I love the blue with the bird footprints!

Happy Belated Valentine's Day to you! Played around last weekend and made this small quilt - 10 X 12.   Used the reverse applique techinque on the tree and the windows.  Once I added the cat, the title "The Great Escape" seemed to fit perfectly.  I gave this to a friend at work who recently "escaped" to a new position.  She has a gray cat named Hobbes, who often looks for the opportunity to escape!  Close up of my tree:

Made a couple of pillows for my daughter and son-in-law to match their t-shirt quilts.  Tried as I might, I wasn't able to get them done before Christmas...but they loved them anyway when I surprised them last weekend. Tried this new technique from Dec/Jan 2010 - Quilting Arts magazine - reverse applique - Beryl Taylor: The finished product:  I began by layering 4 - 5inch squares on top of each other and free motioned stitched making sure to cross threads to create shapes that would later be cut out: With a stitch ripper, I would poke a hole through followed by a part of sharp scissors to cut out the shape.

Yesterday, I went to a neighborhood baby shower for J. J is a super fan of NC State Wolfpack. So without much hesitation I made this cute bibs and matching onesies...I do believe she loves them!!! This week I have been working on another bag with my left over denim shirts. Playing around with some more foil. I intended them to be flowers, however, when I look at them now, they could pass as palm trees. I formed the flowers out of Ferrero Rocher foil (when flattened it's about a 3 1/2 inch square). I picked up three fat quarters at a local quilt shop...just love the browns. I just finished making this for my mother-in-law. A photo from their wedding thank you card...I took a picture of the card. And a photo of their only child - my dear husband when he was about 3. It measures about 11X12. Not sure what she'll think of it but I'm pleased with the outcome. If it gets a good reception, I may follow it up with another of the grandchildren....that'll be fun to make!

Borrowed Karen Eckmeier's book "Layered Waves" from my art quilt mentor, Jenny Williams  Pulled out all my blues and started making layered waves.   Before I knew it the sun was peaking over the last wave.... This is a variation on the Christmas table topper I did a week ago. I was impressed with the Moda Bake Shop receipe here and I tweaked it a bit and made this. Now this one, again, I used 5 inch squares. Instead of doing the 5 x 4 squares, I made two 3 x 3 blocks. I cut those on the diagonals and repositioned them, sewed them back together. The finished piece is about 18 x 24 a little thinner

This was a result of my rather busy weekend in my sewing room.   I saw this block on Piece N Quilt.  After I sewed the three presents, I decided to applique them on a white background instead of creating the block.   I didn't get rave review from the men in my life but I am very happy with it! Maybe they would have liked it better as a block - who knows...I love the bows and the gift tags!

A friend of mine, creates the most beautiful artistic postcards and is always encouraging me to give it a try. She wrote out step by step directions for my Friday before I left work. The heat index in North Carolina has been over a 100 all weekend.  80 degrees by 6am!  As a result, I spent many hours at my sewing machine - started 4 projects just today!  Last Sunday night, I was at the Moda Bake Shop and saw this project.  I decided to use a  Verna charm pack instead of a layer cake.  Measures about 20 x 25 inches - great for a table topper. Very happy how that came out.

Have you seen all the class that are available at Quilt University?   Amazing list of topics for a variety of skill levels. All the classes are online and the fees are reasonable.   I just finished up the class "miniature landscapes".   Here is my first beach landscape: I've got a few things to learn but I am generally happy with the outcome.  There were 10 or so other people taking the class.
